August 2nd primary is just around the corner, and there are a few particularly bad apples who are running for various offices in the State of Washington.

I consider gun politics to be a good litmus test for a politician.

The homicide rates - and generally, violent crime - have been falling in this country for a few decades now, to a point where homicides are nowhere near the top problems that the country faces today.

Excluding the few very specific problem areas - whose real problems are not guns, but poverty and more specifically, income inequality - the homicide rates in the US are on par with the rest of the developed world. An in particular in our state the homicide rates are considerably below the national average.

And even if gun violence were not subsiding, the "solutions" being offered cannot possibly make any impact. Take "Assault Weapons" ban - all rifles are responsible for roughly 300 deaths a year - and AR-15 type rifles are a small fraction of that number. Yes, they are popular with mass shooters - but if AR-15s were not available, common pistols have the same rate of fire and is as deadly at the close range. Regular semi-automatic pistols are also commonly used by mass shooters in this country (see http://www.assaultweapon.info for more background information).

So the anti-gun push by many politicians - who claim that we have an "epidemic of gun violence", and bemoan "mass murder weapons" - is nothing but an attempt to distract voters from their inability to work on real issues - such as shrinking opportunities, povery, and income inequality.

"If you're not a part of the solution, there's good money to be made in prolonging the problem."

The three particularly egregious people are Brady Walkinshaw and Joe McDermott running for the congressional seat in District 7, and Sam Hunt who is running for State Senate in District 22. It is important to understand that while voters may be confused by firearms, these guys are not. They know full well that what they propose is ineffective - cannot be effective. They just want to look busy to the uninitiated voters.

We don't need more red meat issues. We want solutions to real problems facing this country. Let's make these three politicians unemployed next year!
