Winchester Cooey 39
The exact date of the 39's introduction is unclear, but it came on the market just
as World War II was breaking, and remained in production until 1965.
Designed and built by Toronto-born Hubert Joseph Cooey at the family plant in Cobourg,
Ontario, the Cooey 39 has earned a reputation for simplicity, ultra-reliability and safety.
Even with a cartridge in the chamber, the gun must be manually cocked by pulling back the
bolt knob, making accidental discharges all but impossible. And it's versatile, digesting
short, long or long-rifle loads.
There are no accurate records of the number of Cooey 39s sold. It is thought that the number
is somewhere in the vicinity of 65000. And, as a testament to durability, most are still in use today.
The single-shot rifle has a 22" barrel, and its total length is 37". It is perfect for
a teaching a youngster, but its compact size makes it a good all-around tool.
Our rifle has a perfect bore, nice metal, and a well worn stock (but without deep gouges, so it should
be beautiful if refinished). When the pictures were taken, it was missing a rear sight elevator.
We have since added it, but did not update the pictures.
